FEBRUARY EXHIBITIONS AT THE STUDIOS

ON VIEW FEB 2-23, 2023

Friends new and old are invited to join us for this month’s First Thursday Open House event, when we keep our lights on late and throw our doors open to celebrate the newest work in our galleries. Stop in to say hello, relax with a glass of wine on the rooftop terrace, tour the third floor artist studios and see the just-installed exhibitions in the Sanger, XOJ, Zabar Project and Zabar Lobby Galleries. Books & Books is the next stop, where you can browse the latest titles and catch up with old friends.

ALICE'S WONDERFUL WORLD

Rubén Alpízar

Sanger Gallery

One of Cuba’s most beloved artists, Alpízar is a master of his craft at a level that approaches the magical. With the technique of an old master, he combines surreal juxtapositions and razor sharp wit to fashion whole worlds within his paintings and objects. A renaissance merchant might lean out a windowsill to leer at Marilyn Monroe, or a toy version of Pablo Picasso might engage in a boxing match with Salvador Dalí. In his latest series, Alpízar enlists Lewis Carroll’s Alice in a trip down a rabbit hole of the artist’s own design.

MECHANISMS OF LIFE

Nathan Heverin

Zabar Project Gallery

Heverin’s ode to the amalgam of spiritual and technical ingenuity. He starts with a common object of beauty (a horse, a violin), bringing that object to life with polished brass, woodwork and vintage clock parts. The gears, levers, and springs of the clock components display the beautiful harmony and heartbeat found within our individual environments, and the repurposing of these items welcomes each viewer to discover a personal experience or viewpoint.

UNPREDICTABLE JOURNEYS

Jeff Ware

Zabar Lobby Gallery

Jeff Ware’s own unpredictable journey brought him to woodworking four years ago. In the time that’s followed, he’s excelled at the craft producing numerous freeform sculptures from local and non-local woods.
