PROPOSE A PERFORMANCE OR READING

Interested in proposing a performance at The Studios? We’re now accepting proposals for the 2026/27 Season.

The Studios presents a wide range of live performances in our 200-seat Helmerich Theater, from intimate concerts and storytelling events to full-scale theater and dance productions. We welcome proposals across genres — including music, dance, theater, spoken word, and more — as well as staged readings of new plays in development through our First Look series.

Not sure which path is right for you?

  • Have a fully-produced show ready to stage? (A finished play, concert, dance piece, or other performance with cast, creative team, and production elements in place.) → Submit a Performance proposal.
  • Are you a playwright developing a new script? (Whether it’s an early draft or a polished work-in-progress that would benefit from hearing it on its feet in front of an audience.) → Submit a First Look proposal.

PROPOSE A PERFORMANCE

Each year, The Studios offers a wide variety of performances in our 200-seat flexible black box Helmerich Theater, which serves as the perfect space for theater productions, intimate concerts, seminars, and much more. It is also possible to propose performance events to take place on Hugh’s View, our rooftop terrace, for smaller audiences.

This path is best suited to finished productions ready to stage — work that has a director, cast, and creative team in place, and that’s prepared to perform for a ticketed audience. Playwrights with scripts still in development should consider First Look instead.

Please note: decisions regarding which theater productions to present at The Studios flow from the organization’s Purpose, Strategies, and Values, which emphasize directing resources to artists to create innovative work that strengthens our community. To that end, theater presentations at The Studios must be either new works or reinterpretations of existing works. Successful proposals will also create a dialog on contemporary themes.

Interesting proposals may also incorporate the following elements:
1.) Out-of-town artists working alongside local artists
2.) Collaboration with other organizations
3.) A specific aim to engage new audiences

To that end, our strong preference is given to proposals for new works or reinterpretations of existing works.

Deadline: June 1, 2026

Performance Proposal Details

  • Brief synopsis or overview of the piece
  • Relevance/importance of the piece, why it wouldn’t necessarily be seen anywhere else in Key West
  • Number of performers/actors involved
  • Number of creative crew members (director, stage managers, set designers, etc) involved
  • Would the crew consist of local creatives, out-of-town talent, or both?
  • An estimate/simple budget of how much the program will cost to produce. (Please consider all aspects of the program, including travel, housing, artist/actor/creative team fees. If you are unable to estimate specific costs, indicate which expense items would need to be covered.)

PROPOSE A STAGED READING (FIRST LOOK)

In addition to our broader performance offerings, The Studios also presents First Look, a curated series of staged readings designed to spotlight bold new works-in-progress. These readings are lightly staged and followed by a conversation with the audience, offering playwrights valuable insight as they develop their scripts.

If you have a play you’re still shaping — whether it’s a first draft or a near-final revision — First Look is likely the right path for you, even if your script is fully written. The series is designed for work that will benefit from a focused week of development as well as audience feedback and dialogue.

If your proposal is for a staged reading, please indicate that in your submission. Strong candidates for First Look typically:

  • Present original work not yet fully produced

  • Welcome feedback and dialogue as part of the creative process

  • Have a clear artistic vision, even in early stages

Participation in First Look includes production support and a modest honorarium.
