Key West is the beginning of this installation because, as Strauss puts it, Key West is “a place of intense vulnerabilities and ingenuities that tells the story of rising seas better than most.”

How are we grappling with climate change on individual and collective levels in a place we are actively still creating? Portable Memories in Rising Seas is an ongoing participatory project about sea level rise that connects lived experience with memory and climate change. Uncertainties of climate change are a threat and, at the same time, a catalyst for expression, action, and a renewed sense of belonging.

Bulawsky and Strauss understand the importance of data, but know that life experience weighs more heavily on individuals impacted by climate change.
