16 TONS, John Martini &
92 IN THE SHADE, Garth Holtkamp

On Thursday, January 7 from 6-8pm, The Studios of Key West kicks off a new, art-filled year with open artist studios and a reception for two new exhibitions — “16 Tons” by John Martini and “92 in the Shade” by Garth Holtkamp.

Marking 40 years since he arrived in Key West, artist John Martini offers ”16 Tons,” a collection of earlier and more recent work, as a thank you note to the island that has given him “a life rich and piquant.” Martini’s phantasmagorical creations, whether cut from thick sheets of steel or printed as monoprints, are instantly recognizable even as they’ve evolved over time.

Martini moved to Key West in 1976 and rented studio space in a recently abandoned navy base warehouse at Truman Annex for $60 a month. He made jewelry, and continued to make sculptures from pipes and I-beams scavenged around the property.

“I was always working with metal. I always had this dream,” Martini says. “As a kid I used to play blacksmith, believe it or not.”

Over the years he’s become one of island’s leading artists, and his sculptures are shown in galleries and museums including Lucky Street Gallery in Key West, and galleries in New Mexico, Paris, and Italy.

Garth Holtkamp is newer to the art island’s art scene, but has already developed his own distinctive style and an enthusiastic base of fans. With electric colors and expressive line, the self-taught painter and Key West native describes scenes on canvas that are sweetly familiar and curious – like wandering down that little lane or exploring a new canal.

Both exhibitions open Thursday, January 7 from 6-8pm and remain on view through January 28 at The Studios of Key West, 533 Eaton Street.
