Tactile Response

Beth Kaminstein

Opens Thu Mar 6, 6-8pm

On view March 6-27, 2025

Zabar Lobby Gallery

Combining an appreciation for space and color with a tactile sensibility, Kaminstein draws inspiration from nature to create clay sculptures, platters, and bowls that explore complex layering, light, and form.

“As an artist working with clay, my shapes and colors are drawn from the environment around me as well as from my study of art. I live with a vast expanse of ocean and sky in front of me, which manifests in my work and I thrive on the notion that my surroundings directly affect it both consciously and subconsciously.”

On view October 3-31, 2024

Zabar Lobby Gallery

“40 Years of Sunsets” commemorates the 40th anniversary of the iconic Sunset Celebration at Mallory Square, a cornerstone of Key West culture. This exhibition honors the tradition of celebrating the setting sun, a practice dating back to the 1830s, which has evolved into a nightly festivity uniting people from all walks of life. The event has long supported local artists, providing a platform for them to thrive and share their talents.

The exhibition features a diverse array of handmade artwork, including wire and wooden sculptures, paintings, handcrafted jewelry, fiber art, and comic books. A video presentation showcases busker and musician performances alongside interviews with participants, highlighting the celebration’s significance. Visitors can explore photographs documenting the event’s history and interact with a timeline detailing major milestones. They are encouraged to mark when they first discovered Mallory Square and send prefilled postcards to Key West representatives, underscoring the event’s importance.

Half of the proceeds from the show will support the Key West Cultural Preservation Society, helping to alleviate the challenges posed by rising living costs and the lingering effects of the pandemic. Join us in celebrating this beloved tradition and ensuring its continuity for future generations.
