The mango is not only a fruit best savored under a tropical sun—it’s also a metaphor for the annual bounty of our island, meant to be shared with friends and neighbors. As such it’s the perfect symbol for our summer members’ exhibition, where everyone in our artistic family is invited to submit work. The results never fail to nourish the soul.

In honor of 25 years serving the Florida Keys, Womankind joins forces with The Studios of Key West for the first-ever Chair-ity event—an imaginative art exhibition where the humble chair becomes a canvas for creativity. Artists have been invited to interpret the chair in any way they choose—functional, symbolic, whimsical, or profound.

From bold transformations to subtle statements, each piece offers a unique perspective on this everyday object, reflecting the vision and voice of its creator. Proceeds from the event support Womankind’s mission of providing accessible, compassionate health care, ensuring this celebration of art also makes a tangible impact in the community.

It Always Grows

Ian J. Welch

Textured monochrome print showing a dense cluster of branches with jagged cutouts, giving the impression of fragmented or eroded wood.

Opens Thu Jan 8, 6-8pm

On view January 8-29, 2026

Ian J. Welch reflects on the tension between human boundaries and the persistence of the natural world. Through printmaking, drawing, and handmade paper incorporating materials gathered from the landscapes he studies, Welch documents spaces in transition—both lush and scarred, naturally evolving and human-altered.

His work emerges from hours of on-site observation and photography, focusing on “liminal spaces” where multiple transitions occur at once: subtle shifts in vegetation, abrupt incursions of concrete or fencing, the layered marks of unchecked progress. The resulting images, printed in hand-pulled editions, meditate on our vulnerability to nature’s power and our own greed, while affirming the resilience of the living world. Whether framed or unframed, each work offers a tactile record of place and moment—reminders that nature always finds a way forward.

Master woodcarver Wayne Garcia brings to life the monumental story of Flagler’s Overseas Railroad through a series of colorful, shallow relief carvings. Drawing on the folk art tradition of his mentor, Mario Sanchez, Garcia etches vivid scenes of the railroad’s construction across the Florida Keys, honoring the local Key West residents whose labor shaped this feat of engineering between 1906 and 1912.

A third-generation Cuban American, Garcia has shared his artistry in both New York City and Havana, giving carving demonstrations at the American Folk Art Museum and carrying forward a celebrated Key West craft tradition. This exhibition is paired with a one-night lecture by the artist on Friday, May 22, offering personal stories, historical insight, and a deep sense of place to accompany these intricate, hand-carved works.

Painter Meggi Siegert turns her focus from faces to forms, using the female figure as both outer contour and inner landscape. These quiet, contemplative works explore sensitivity, vulnerability, and emotional depth—not through facial expression, but through the intimacy of pose, the stillness of gesture, and the power of presence. Each silhouette becomes a vessel for introspection, capturing a sense of mystery that lingers beyond the canvas.

A self-taught artist with a background in psychology and art therapy, Siegert brings a tender understanding of the human spirit to her work. Living and painting in a pink house on a tropical island, she continues to uncover what lies beneath the surface—inviting viewers to slow down, look closer, and feel what remains unspoken.

Floridian Fabrique

Emma Mykowski

Realistic painting of a pile of green oranges with a wooden sign reading “100% Natural Oranges” and sliced fruit in the foreground.

On view October 2-30, 2025

Zabar Lobby Gallery

Floridian Fabrique is a vibrant, maximalist celebration of Florida’s textile traditions—past and present. Through richly detailed paintings and ceramic sculptures, artist Emma Mykowski elevates the patterns, textures, and stories woven into the state’s cultural fabric. From the intricate patchwork of Seminole and Miccosukee quilting to the bold prints of Key West Hand Print Fabrics and Miami designers like Julian Chang, this exhibition honors the artistry and history embedded in cloth.

By reversing the traditional dynamic—using painting and sculpture to immortalize textiles rather than merely adorn them—Mykowski challenges long-held art hierarchies. The exhibition pays tribute to Florida’s tropical aesthetic while acknowledging the complexities of its textile legacy, including the impact of the cotton trade and the influence of African and Caribbean traditions.

Gardens of the Imagination

Winter Members’ Exhibit

Opens Thu Dec 5, 6-8pm

On view December 5-22, 2024

Sanger, XOJ, Zabar Project and Zabar Lobby Galleries

The gardens we live with are an expression of who we are as much as the clothes we wear: wild or restrained; moody or ebullient; carefully nurtured or joyfully haphazard. Each is a product of the soil from which it arises, touched by inspiration. Of course, our gardens in the Keys are stocked with shapes and colors you won’t find anywhere else – especially in December! Our annual winter exhibition is a cornucopia of ideas and images that grew in the minds of our members, or blossomed before their eyes.
