Emma MacLean

Opens Thu Nov 7, 6-8pm

On view November 7-28, 2024

XOJ Gallery

Experience the profound work of Emma MacLean, a chronically ill and disabled artist who visualizes pain through 78 meticulously crafted textile pieces. Each piece represents a specific word from the McGill Pain Questionnaire, a comprehensive tool used by medical professionals to measure and describe the qualities and intensity of pain. The words, sorted into 20 groups, range from “flickering”, “crushing,” “exhausting,” to “cruel.”

This exhibition also invites viewers to engage with a collaborative quilt, fostering a deeper connection and understanding of chronic pain. By interacting with this quilt, visitors can gain insight into the artist’s lived experience and challenge the isolation that pain so often causes. Each of us experience pain in a unique way, this shared quilt creates a space for empathy, community and connection.

On view November 7-28, 2024

Sanger Gallery

Drawing inspiration from the vibrant flora and birdlife of her native Australia, Debra delves into the intricate relationship between humans and nature, as well as the connections we have with ourselves and one another. She believes that nature uniquely encourages introspection, especially during challenging times. Her pieces incorporate a vibrant fantasy element, transporting the audience into an enchanted, surreal underwater world of swirling nature.

From the intense, diverse energy of New York, Debra Hill creates powerful narrative works drawn from her imagination. Her work is bold, whimsical, colorful and symbolic. Her color palette is inspired by the intense light of the southern hemisphere of her youth. Under vivid blue skies, nature’s colors pulsate with life. She is drawn to the unnatural juxtaposition of images and fantasy. Whimsy is often expressed through symbolic use of native birds.

“40 Years of Sunsets” commemorates the 40th anniversary of the iconic Sunset Celebration at Mallory Square, a cornerstone of Key West culture. This exhibition honors the tradition of celebrating the setting sun, a practice dating back to the 1830s, which has evolved into a nightly festivity uniting people from all walks of life. The event has long supported local artists, providing a platform for them to thrive and share their talents.

The exhibition features a diverse array of handmade artwork, including wire and wooden sculptures, paintings, handcrafted jewelry, fiber art, and comic books. A video presentation showcases busker and musician performances alongside interviews with participants, highlighting the celebration’s significance. Visitors can explore photographs documenting the event’s history and interact with a timeline detailing major milestones. They are encouraged to mark when they first discovered Mallory Square and send prefilled postcards to Key West representatives, underscoring the event’s importance.

Half of the proceeds from the show will support the Key West Cultural Preservation Society, helping to alleviate the challenges posed by rising living costs and the lingering effects of the pandemic. Join us in celebrating this beloved tradition and ensuring its continuity for future generations.
