EVERYTHING I EVER NEEDED TO KNOW I HAD TO LEARN OVER IN MY OWN LANGUAGE

KATHARINE DOUGHTY

OPENING: FIRST THURSDAY NOV 3, 6-8PM

XOJ Gallery

Sketch of the front of a naked woman standing in front of a mirror, with her reflection also facing forward

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION:

Doughty’s series of alphabet self-portraits began with an “A” in 1999 and finished with a “Z” in 2017. The complete series shows an exploration of personal mythology, archetypes, and the differences between writing and visual imagery.

While the majority of the pieces were executed directly from a mirror, later pieces are more imaginative and include multiple figures which are not herself. Along the way, the project became a meditation on and documentation of the passage of time.
