Pioneering expanded-animation artist Eric Dyer and world-renowned pianist Jiayin Shen are Duo Kinetica. Brought together by a Studios residency in 2014, the Duo officially formed after their enthusiastically-received 2022 show at the National Gallery of Art (DC). They are thrilled to return for a music-visual performance that will feature two decades of the artists’ works and lead the audience on a spiritual, historical, and spatial journey.

Dyer’s visual turntablism method reinvents the Victorian Era phenakistiscope, one of the earliest forms of moving images, and blends it with live DJ performance practices to present mind-bogglingly complex and beautiful animated visuals as well as dynamic stillness-come-to-life in found-objects. The music selection for this program will bring to the audience sounds from the Classical era to music in the modern age. Beethoven, Chopin, Scott Joplin, John Adams, Steve Reich, Osvaldo Golijov and Nils Frahm are among the composers. The Duo explores themes including non-violence, motion hidden in everyday life, the city symphony, pre-cinema history, and our relationship with technology.
