Anna in the Tropics may be set in Ybor City (Tampa), but the story is familiar to anyone interested in Key West history. Nilo Cruz’s Pulitzer Prize winning script recounts the tradition of the lector, a person hired to read to cigar factory workers as they hand rolled cigars, in the early 1900s. Juan Julian, the play’s lector, introduces the cigar workers to Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina, sparking romance and its inherent madness. Anna celebrates the cultural history of Cuban immigrants, who brought their traditions to Florida, sparking an era of sultry tropical nights shrouded in cigar smoke.
