Programs for Kids & Teens

They say everyone’s born an artist; most people just forget somewhere along the way. With a galaxy of programs for young people, The Studios provides creative experiences and learning opportunities designed to last a lifetime.

Schools @ The Studios

All year long, our galleries are transformed into living classrooms as elementary and middle school students not only visit the exhibitions, but meet the artists who made them possible! Our experienced artist educator Bria Ansara designs custom lesson plans for each visit, meeting with our exhibiting and resident artists, and ending with hands on activities to build skills and deepen their understanding.

Launched in partnership with the May Sands Montessori School, with support from the Community Foundation of the Florida Keys, the Howley Foundation, Glen and Margaret Wood, and the Florida Keys Council of the Arts “Artists in Schools” grant. We’ve expanded to include Title IV public schools in Key West, the Basilica School and Take Stock in Children.

Key West High School Drama Club

The Studios is thrilled to provide a regular home to members of the Key West High School Drama Club, under the leadership of the inimitable Juliet Gray. Over four weekends throughout the year we join forces to co-present Bubba’s Fables in Truman Waterfront Park, a series of classic Aesop stories perfect for small children filled with Key West characters. We’re also excited to host both the Drama Club’s spectacular Spring Musical and Holiday Review!

In partnership with Fleming Street Faith Center and made possible by the Community Foundation of the Florida Keys. Additional support for Bubba’s Fables from the Florida Keys Council for the Arts “Art Builds Community” grant.

Summer & Spring Break Art Camps

With different teachers, different themes and different materials to explore each week, the summer doldrums don’t stand a chance at our annual summer art camp in partnership with Fringe Theater – Camp Bravo! Professional artists and educators lead the way with innovative curricula and fun, culminating in a performance for the whole community to enjoy. Details on camps are posted on the website by spring. Local parents know it can be hard to fill the days when school’s out, and we’re here to help. Ask about our scholarships!

In the spring, we will typically offer a weeklong camp during the Break presented by a local educator or two. Check the website in January for announcements.

Books & Books School Youth Advisory Board

With the help of a select group of “junior editors” grade 6-12 from schools across Key West, the bookstore gets expert advise from the younger set on new authors, events and what should be on our shelves. Youth Advisors write short reviews for book tags posted throughout the store and help promote book events for kids and families.

Robert Frost Poetry Contest

In celebration of National Poetry Month in April, and Robert Frost (1874-1963), The Studios of Key West is delighted to host the Annual Kids and Teen Poetry Contest each year. National Poetry Month is a worldwide celebration that highlights poetry’s vital place in our culture. The Florida Keys have a special connection with Robert Frost, who won four Pulitzer Prizes for his poetry, and wintered many years at the garden cottage of the Heritage House in Key West. The contest for children and teenagers was created in his honor, and nurtures and develops the interest of budding poets, and their vital connection to the Keys’ creative spirit.

The call goes out in March before Spring Break and runs throughout Poetry Month in April with a deadline and ceremony in May.

Youth Arts Fellowship Program

Each year we hand-pick a small number of high achieving high school artists for one-on-one mentoring by professional artists to get them ready for college and beyond. Youth Arts Fellows also benefit from free access to Studios classes and events and other pre-professional support.
