Writing the Short Story (Beginners)
A two-part workshop
In the first workshop we discuss the short story form, and look in depth at craft issues in short stories. After the break we work on some generative writing activities related to character and description. Before going home, participants receive handouts of a short story to discuss at the next class as well as a short “homework” type of exercise related to their own short stories.
In the second workshop we discuss the story we read and look at some issues related to craft such as character, dialogue, scene, plot, beginnings, and endings. After another writing exercise on character, dialogue, scene and conflict, participants give a brief reading of writing they have done for the workshop and discuss their short stories.
Beginners who have not taken writing workshops should leave the workshop with an understanding of craft issues in the short story as well as a beginning draft of a story they’d like to complete.
