Local Folk Art legend Andy Thurber has been diligently and successfully carrying on the tradition of Mario Sanchez, with his own twists, turns and special touches, for over 25 years. A bona fide Conch, Thurber knows the idiosyncrasies of the community as well as anyone. His woodcuts and watercolors hold a mirror to all the quirks encompassed in our two by four mile island.
Aside from noting the elements of a disappearing way of life, Thurber is also preserving a traditional art form—one with deep roots in Cayo Hueso. This workshop offers a very rare opportunity to learn the basics of woodcut relief from someone who’s mastered the form.
