Who I Am and What I Know Exhibition/Reception

Artist/facilitator Lura Smedstad came to Project Lighthouse to help serve Christmas dinner in  2009. She read a brochure, met some of the kids, and knew that she wanted to spend some time helping out. She began to volunteer regularly, running errands, setting up art projects, treating blisters, sharing homemade chili and soups, filling out resumes, folding laundry, and trying to be open to learn.

In October 2010 she worked with Unity of the Keys to raise funds for single-use cameras, and handed these out to several of the teens.

Smedstad, who has an art background herself, also asked several of the Lighthouse youths to pose for portraits. Attempting to capture the “traveler essence’ of the subjects, she has completed three large oil portraits which will also be on display.

The body of work that results will be on display from July 7-26 in Space 2 at the Armory, and there will be a reception celebrating the work on July 21 from 6-9 pm.
