The Studios of Key West is thrilled to be one of the 2015 Knight Arts Challenge grant recipients. The Studios, along with the innovative Wendy Taucher Dance Opera Theater (WT DOT) and visual artist Claudia Miller, were awarded a $50,000 grant to launch their project, Lost at the Beach.
With maps and apps to guide the way like a child’s treasure hunt, Lost at the Beach allows audiences explore the hidden corners of Fort Zachary Taylor State Park, encountering performance and installations that cohere into an ephemeral portrait of Key West.
Community members and local artists, including sculptors, painters, and performers, create and contribute works that lead the eye from point to point. An opera singer serenades a long lost sailor from the ramparts of the 19th century brick fort. Contemporary dancers echo the wind among the swaying Australian pines. A children’s chorus sings Cuban folk songs while looking to the horizon.
Slated for 2017, the project takes place in the context of efforts to shift to sustainable cultural tourism that flows from our history, natural resources, and location, and opens the door for a significant art event to bring attention to one of the island’s most beloved and evocative sites.
Look for more details on the project in late 2016.
