Opening reception: Thurs, Feb 21, 6-9pm
Paris is known throughout the world as a destination that combines an ever-changing arts scene, a café culture that inspires conversations and connections, and backdrops of unparalleled beauty. Place those elements on an island and it could be likened to Key West. These two world-class cities will collide in February at The Studios of Key West with the opening of their latest exhibition, The French Connection featuring Michele Byrne and Paul Findlay.
The public is invited to an opening reception with the artists from 6 to 9pm on Thursday, February 21 during Walk on White. In honor of the exhibition, delectable french treats will be provided by La Creperie, Croissants de France, and Frenchie’s Cafe.
Current TSKW Artist in Residence Michele Byrne will exhibit selections from her plein air paintings of Paris. Working on the avenues and around the cafes, Byrne captures not just the sights of the City of Lights, but also the people who fill its famous streets on often rainy days. Recently though, Byrne has come out of the rain and turned her palette to sunny Key West. Over the past couple of weeks, she has feverishly been painting in her signature style, creating expressive but intimate portraits of the island. While here, Byrne is learning to balance her plein air supplies on a bicycle, working to perfect a painted palm tree, and enjoying the fellowship of the other Artists in Residence.
People of Key West know Paul Findlay as a tennis pro extraordinaire, but not everyone is as familiar with his artistic side. For The French Connection, Findlay will display his striking photographs of Paris. Married to the owner of La Creperie, Findlay has a deep and personal connection to France that is immediately evident in his work. While the scenes he photographs are sometimes recognizable, they are shown in an entirely new light through the unique lens of an artist.
The French Connection opens February 21st, as part of Walk on White, and will remain on view through March 10th.
The exhibition is sponsored by Doug Mayberry Real Estate.
