The Studios offers a residency program for emerging and established artists and writers designed to encourage creative, intellectual and personal growth. The program grants nearly 35 artists each year the time and space to imagine new artistic work, engage in valuable dialogue and explore island connections.
The Studios’ residency program is community-based and built upon the hope that visiting artists will take inspiration from Key West’s rich artistic past and present, and will engage with — and be inspired by — the remarkable people and culture that surrounds them.
Key West’s official motto, “One Human Family” reflects our commitment to living together as caring, sharing neighbors dedicated to making our home as close to paradise as we can. To that end, we encourage artists of all races, nationalities, gender identities, sexual orientations, and abilities to apply.
Residencies are almost a full month, and run from the 16th of the month through the 14th of the next.
“Cannot recommend it highly enough. From the quiet of the cottages, to the support of the Studios staff and the community, to the vibrant culture of Key West, this is an ideal set-up for an artist looking to make major progress on their work.”

HOW TO APPLY:
We are currently accepting applications for residencies falling between Oct 2018 and Aug 2019. The deadline to apply is May 15, 2018.
The online application can be found here.
Applications for residency at The Studios of Key West must now be submitted through an online application process. A $40 application fee applies to online submissions and is collected through an application portal.
COMMONLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
Yes. When submitting an application, artists must select one of five program areas in which to apply: Visual Arts, Literary Arts, Media Arts, Musical Arts, and Performing Arts. The application fees for each program are the same.
There is no fee for the residency once an artist has been accepted into the program. However, artists are responsible for their travel to Key West, as well as living expenses and incidentals.
We’re sorry, we are currently unable to provide financial support for accepted artists.
We accept international artists! You would technically qualify for the Visa Waiver Program through the U.S., meaning you’re not receiving any sort of payment in exchange for the residency and your stay is under 90 days.
• Period 1: Oct 2018 thru Jan 2019
• Period 2: Feb 2019 thru Apr 2019
• Period 3: May 2019 thru Aug 2019
If you are granted a residency, we will ask you to rank the time slots falling within that Residency Period according to preference, and will work with you to schedule your residency in a slot that is mutually agreeable. (We are unable to schedule residencies in any other Residency Period than the one to which you applied.)
Almost a full month — residencies begin on the 16th of the month and conclude on the 14th of the following month. (e.g. artists may arrive on April 16 and must depart on May 14).
Last year, approximately 235 artists applied, and 31 artists (13%) were accepted.
Artists are housed in Conch cottages with combined live/work spaces. At this time, we are not able to offer separate work studios to artists. In order to help us make your stay conducive to good work as possible, you must describe as clearly as possible what your space and living requirements/limitations will be when applying. (For example, are stairs an issue for you? Is there a reason you can’t share a kitchen? Are there any elements that are essential to your work process or studio setup that we should know about?)
