Melody Cooper has carried on a life long love affair with Latin American music, and has dedicated herself to studying, practicing and performing for appreciative audiences. Key Westers are invited to experience the romance themselves when Cooper joins together with Cuban American guitarist Jose Lezcano to present Spanish Rhapsody 3, a concert at The Studios of Key West on Wednesday, June 26 at 8pm. Tickets are $20 advance/$25 day of show.
Together, Cooper and Lezcano present the lyrical melodies, passionate poetry, and sexy rhythms of the Spanish and Latin American repertoire written for voice and guitar. Jose Lezcano, who was selected this year as an artist in TSKW’s residency program, presents original compositions and stunning solo guitar pieces to round out the magical evening.
Described in 2012 by Fanfare Magazine as “an excellent guitarist as well as an imaginative composer,” twice Grammy-nominated musician Jose Manuel Lezcano has captivated audiences on four continents. His original compositions have taken him from Carnegie Recital Hall and the North-South Consonance Series in New York City to major venues and festivals in Ecuador, Colombia, Peru, Brazil, Spain, Crete, China, the Czech Republic and Germany. Lezcano is Professor of Music at Keene State College where he directs the Guitar Orchestra and Latin Ensemble, and teaches guitar and courses in Latin American and Spanish music.
Melody Cooper has had an eclectic career in jazz, popular, Latin and classical music. She is known to Key West audiences as a member of the Paradise Big Band, and pianist, singer and harpist for many events and clubs in town. In 2008 and 2011, Melody traveled to Spain to participate in a series of lectures, language labs, concerts and vocal masterclasses with Project Cancion Española and the Barcelona Festival of Song. In Barcelona, Melody and Jose were introduced musically by the brilliant director of the program Patricia Caceido. Melody returns to Spain this July with Project Cancion Española in Granada and Madrid.
