Lauren Amalia-Redding’s silverpoint workshop moves between demonstrations, materials testing, and producing actual silverpoint drawings. Students learn the art historical context of silverpoint and are exposed to different pigments and ingredients integral to—and not often associated with—drawing as a burgeoning art form in its own right. Students also learn that silverpoint, as a medium, is particularly “Florida friendly” and can be used for taken plein-air sketching.
Workshop participants can expect to learn about a drawing medium and its ensuing method that few people currently know about, much less employ. Redding takes a sometimes-intimidating medium and method and makes it approachable and enjoyable. As silverpoint is contingent upon developing an image using hatchmarks that are not easily erased (if erasable at all), participants are forced to slow down and consider their draftsmanship. Redding promises to expose the geekier side of art-making.
