Scratchboard Flora with AIR Lisa Goesling

Etching on scratchboard – boards covered in a layer of porcelain clay and then covered in India ink – is a simple yet elegant way to record observations in the natural world. Students are equipped with boards, etching tools, a magnifying glass, colored inks, and various flora samples. In studying and documenting these samples, students become acutely aware of the minute patterns and textures that abound in nature. Everyone experiences pure magic as they begin to etch into the ink, watching their image miraculously appears in the layer of white clay.
