Reading list coming soon.
In this structured reading group, participants delve into island literature and look beyond the paradisiacal image of Key West. Read and discuss books and excerpts by writers who understood the island as a vital, living, complicated place. Selections include works by Ernest Hemingway, Elizabeth Bishop and Thomas McGuane. Members will gain a better understanding of the island, its history and its rich literary heritage. Drop into one or sign up for the entire series! Advance reading required for each session.
Jan. 24: To Have and Have Not by Ernest Hemingway
Feb. 14: Panama by Thomas McGuane
Feb. 28: Selected poems, prose and letters by Elizabeth Bishop
March 14: Key West Tales by John Hersey
March 28: The Truth About Lorin Jones by Alison Lurie
April 11: Scavenger Reef by Laurence Shames
Students are responsible for obtaining reading materials on their own — all are available at the library and Key West Island Books (which will offer a discount to class participants). An Elizabeth Bishop packet will be available to students and can be obtained from the TSKW program office.
