A new batch of artists in residence has just arrived at The Studios of Key West and will spend the month of May discovering and exploring the island. Upcoming opportunities for the public to meet and work with the artists include classes and workshops, and a literary reading.
“The TSKW residency program was built upon the idea that artists share their talents and contribute in some way,” says Jay Scott, executive director. “Whether it be through an exhibition, a class or a presentation, we work with the artists to create meaningful opportunities for the community.”
“We hope people will check out our website to learn about the artists who will be joining us each month.”continues Scott. “The monthly “On the Deck” series is a great way to learn about our artists and make some new friends.”
Three residency artists will also offer classes and workshops this month.
Regina Jestrow, a sculptor from Miami, will lead Close Knit Group, a Monday evening class meeting on May 7, 14, and 21 from 6-8:30 pm. This group is for sharing, learning, collaborating and critiquing. Students will bring yarn, and either knitting needles or crochet hooks. Beginners will learn some basic stitches to get started. More advanced needleworkers may challenge their skills further. The fee for the three session class is $45 for TSKW members/ $55 for non-members.
Frank Ortega, a writer from Cold Spring, New York, will teach a writing course called A Sense of Place on May 8, 15, and 22 from 9:30-11:30 am. Ortega is a poet, essayist and teacher, and this course will explore the importance of deliberate observation and careful recording, of what can be learned in attempting to recall a place and render it eternal. The fee for the course is $75 for TSKW members/ $90 for non-members.
Marie Bergstedt, a sculptor from San Francisco, will teach Reconstructing Memories on May 14 and 21 from 12-4 pm. Students will work with a variety of materials and techniques to create a thought provoking work of art inspired by their memories. The fee for the workshop is $80 for TSKW members/ $100 for non-members.
On Wednesday, May 23 at 7 pm, writers Frank Ortega and Pepe Carretero will present readings of their work at The Studios. Carretero, a painter and poet from Madrid, Spain, will read poetry in his native Spanish language, and Ortega, who has read at the Poetry Society of America, Knitting Factory, New York Public Library, Brecht Forum, CB’s 313, and Barrow Street Poets, will read an excerpt from his work.
