The Larry Smith Quartet (pianist Larry Smith, drummer Dan Brubeck, saxophonist Tim Mayer, and bassist Geoffrey Lowe) perform a concert of Smith’s original compositions on Sunday, January 31 at 8 PM at The Studios of Key West. Key West pianist/composer Larry Smith is bringing the band back together! By the band we mean this quartet of internationally renowned jazz musicians from across the continent. They are meeting here in Key West to record new tracks, and perform new music, all of which is composed by Smith.
This quartet first convened here in Key West a few of years ago to record and perform Smith’s compositions resulting in the CD “Four Man Vision” – and this year’s concert will be the official release event for that disc.
Larry Smith is well known to Key West audiences as a singer/pianist with an inexhaustible repertoire and a mastery of jazz-pop standards. Smith is also known as an accomplished accompanist/mentor to just about every singer and instrumentalist to have passed through Key West. But it is Smith’s lesser-known compositional abilities that will be showcased at this Studios of Key West Concert.
Drummer Dan Brubeck (son of legendary Dave Brubeck), from Vancouver BC, has earned the respect of music critics worldwide for his original drumming style, distinctive solos, and mastery of polyrhythms and odd time signatures. He continues to tour constantly with his brother Chris in the Brubeck Brothers Quartet.
A graduate of Berklee College of Music, saxophonist Tim Mayer has been active in Jazz and Latin Jazz, and recently released “Resilisance”, the first CD under his own name, on the Jazz Legacy Productions label. Tim currently resides in Xalapa, Mexico and works as a full-time professor at the Centro de estudios de Jazz (Center for Jazz Studies) at Veracruz University. Tim maintains ties as a faculty member with Berklee.
Chicago bassist Geoffrey Lowe has performed at The Chicago Jazz Festival, The North Shore Sea Jazz Festival (Holland), Montreux Jazz Festival (Switzerland), Park Tower Blues Festival (Japan) and the Spoletto Music Festival (Italy). Geoffrey was educated at Colorado State University and his talents range from numerous studio credits to live performing.
This is a “must see” event for all jazz lovers. More information on the concert can be found at larrysmithkeywest.com.
