Inspired by Jeff Beal, a master at transforming found objects into whimsical painted creations, TSKW rolls out a DIY art contest like no other.

First, sharpen your eyes and hit the town in search of a yard sale treasure or flea market find with untapped potential. Bring it home, or back to The Studios to paint it, bedazzle it, or otherwise remake it as your own individual creation. Just turn it in by 4pm, then relax at 4:30 for a reception with juried prizes to bask in your accomplishment. Please see complete rules below.

SCHEDULE AND RULES

  •  Pre-registration is strongly encouraged. Please register here or by calling 305-296-0458. (Participation Fee $20, $15 mbrs).

  • On April 12, hit the streets early and pick up a treasure at one of Key West’s fine yard sales! (Possible treasures may include lamps, dishes, chairs, tables, hand-mirrors, stools – use your imagination!)

  • Alternatively, you may work on a piece you already have at home, or that you pick up between now and April 12, but remember, this contest is based on the honor system! – We ask that you don’t begin painting, embellishing, or in any way beautifying your piece until 9am on Saturday, April 12!

  • Any time between now and April 12 (and certainly before you begin working on it!) please bring your treasure to TSKW to show it to us, or simply email a ‘before’ photo of your piece to diane@tskw.org. You must send a ‘before’ photo or stop by with your unembellished piece before 11am on April 12 to be eligible to participate.

  • On April 12,  The Armory doors will be open at 9am and we’ll be here with coffee, pastries, glue guns, basic paints and brushes and random embellishments.  Please bring any extra supplies you’d like, and work on your piece at the Armory – or feel free to work on your piece at home, wherever you’re most comfortable.
  • Materials/supplies available for use at TSKW:
acrylic tube paint, gel mediums, latex enamel (house paint), brushes (small to large), crayons, water based & oil based markers, tile & glass /mosaic fragments, hot glue guns, caulk adhesive, and tables with dropcloths

  • By 4pm you’ll return to the Armory with your finished piece for display and judging.

  • Tell your friends! From 4:30-5:30pm all the gorgeous treasures created during the day will be on display and will be celebrated with a public wine reception at TSKW. Artists wishing to sell their works will retain 75% of the sale price. An awards ceremony with prizes will follow at 5pm.

Happy hunting!
