You have a play with great characters, a good story and well-written dialogue – now you want to adapt it to the screen. What are the next steps? How do you hold on to the essential “liveness” of theatre as your story transitions to a new medium? This 90 minute masterclass with rising star Marco Calvani will give you an overview and guide you through the constraints – and freedoms – of each art form to tell your story in the best way possible.
Calvani is an Italian born award-winning writer, director and filmmaker with one foot firmly in the theatre world, having most recently served as dramaturg on Broadway’s “The Rose Tattoo” starring Marisa Tomei. He is currently at work on two feature films.
Through a close analysis of Calvani’s debut film “The View from Up Here” starring Oscar-winner Melissa Leo, Marco guides students through his process of crafting stories that can engage audiences of both stage and screen.
Topics will include structure, dialogue, scenes, cinematography, editing, and budget. This class is for students who are currently working on a script as well as those who are simply passionate students of theater and/or film.
Marco Calvani is an Italian born award-winning writer, director and filmmaker. Permanent artist-in-residence at La MaMa Theatre. US theatre credits include: The Rose Tattoo starring Marisa Tomei (Broadway, Roundabout, dramaturg), Beautiful Day Without You starring Dan Butler (Off-Broadway), Things of This World starring Estelle Parsons (La MaMa). Film: The View from Up Here (USA/France) starring Melissa Leo.
Marco is a former Artist in Residence with The Studios of Key West.
