Blackbird

“… bruising … powerful … masterly…” – New York Times

Blackbird by David Harrower, last season’s Broadway hit, has its Key West premiere for three nights only, March 3-5, at The Studios of Key West. The New York Times called this Olivier Award winning play, which explores the catastrophic effects of a sexual relationship between a middle-aged man and a young girl  “… bruising … powerful … masterly…”. Dennis Zacek, Artistic Director Emeritus of Chicago’s Tony Award Recipient Victory Gardens Theater and veteran of Fringe Theater Key West, directs.

Starring Mike Mulligan and Jessica Miano Kruel in roles that won their Broadway counterparts Tony nominations, the play begins when Una visits Ray in the drab office break room of his workplace. Fifteen years earlier, when Una was twelve and Ray was in his 40’s, they had a three month-long sexual relationship. When Una finds him again, a devastating confrontation ensues.

The play has received luminous reviews. Scotland’s Sunday Herald raved, “Harrower’s play positively explodes with unresolved and, possibly irresolvable, concerns… his brooding ambiguity and his dry, resonating poetry culminate in one of the most daring new plays of recent years.”
