Class Description

Artist and astronomy buff Halstead takes Studios visitors to the cosmos and back as he discusses what they can expect to see swirling overhead in Key West—and how to comprehend where those objects fit in terms of scale, distance, and location in the night sky. For this session, students will join Halstead on Hugh’s View for an actual observation through Halstead’s high-powered telescope.

Meet Your Instructor

Larry Halstead retired from a 32 year career as an engineer in Michigan with prior service as a pilot in the U.S. Air Force. He has a Bachelor’s Degree in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Michigan. He has been active in amateur astronomy for over 30 years. He and his wife Carol spend the cooler months at their home in Key West, where he is an active member at the Guild Hall Gallery on Duval Street and at the Shady Palm Gallery in Marathon. He can occasionally be found sharing views of the planets with new friends from all over the world at Mallory Square.
