Cara Bonewitz is an April Artist in Residence who has been traveling the world for the better part of the year. The varied architecture from each city she visits is reflected in her work. Join The Studios for her Artist Talk to learn more about her method, and hear if Key West has had an effect.
“I currently paint images of buildings wrapped in brightly patterned textiles as a way to explore visual systems, fragmented moments, and ambiguous associations that are inherent in domestic and industrial spaces. Using photographs of buildings and textile patterns as source material, I combine architectural lines with repetitive patterns to create a new image that is a disjointed and obscure re-presentation of structure, routine and memory. I explore the new geometric relationships and recurring patterns as they reveal themselves. Certain pieces become clearer and others more obscure, either by chance or intentional interventions. Sometimes I find that these relationships and systems emanate from their environments. At other times I impose these visual patterns and associations upon the structures The result is something that is both familiar and foreign, methodized and spontaneous. “
