You’ll find that the Key West community is very welcoming to new people (especially creative ones!) – and there is never a shortage of things to do. In fact, many artists have said the challenge is finding time to work in between all the social “stuff” that goes on!
Your time is yours to do with as you choose, of course, and we respect that you’ll need plenty of time to dream, reflect and create. To that end, we only ask that you plan to participate in two events while you are here:
Second Wednesday of each month, 6-8pm. Depending on the time of year, a group of about 20-40 friends and community members gather together for an informal potluck and a chance to meet our residency artists ‘on the deck’ at the Ashe Street cottages. The Studios provides beverages and guests bring a dish to share (bring whatever you’d like – from chips and salsa to your favorite recipe). About halfway through the night, each of the residency artists takes few minutes to introduce themselves and talk about their work or what they’re working on in Key West (remember, it’s very casual, so no powerpoint presentations necessary!). Writers often like to read a very short bit of their work and artists often like to open their studios to show what they are working on – but neither is necessary, whatever you feel comfortable with.
2015/16 “On the Deck” dates: Sep 9, Oct 7, Nov 11, Dec 9, Jan 13, Feb 10, Mar 9, Apr 13, May 11, Jun 8, Jul 13.
Third Thursday of each month, 6-8pm. Galleries and artists along White Street open their doors for an open house one evening each month. Depending on the time of year, anywhere from a few dozen to a couple of hundred people take part in the gallery walk As the residency cottages are just around the corner from White Street, we usually get a steady flow of interested folks who stop in to have a glass of wine and see what our current artists are up to. We ask that visual artists open their studios for the evening to show their work and be available to answer questions. If you are a video or performance artist, once you have gotten settled we can work together to figure out creative ways to present your work for the evening. If you’re a writer, there’s no need for you to present anything (unless you have creative ideas for how it can be done!) – but we do like to have you join us for the evening to meet the community.
2015/16 “Walk on White” dates: Oct 15, Nov 19, Dec 17, Jan 21, Feb 18, Mar 17, Apr 21, May 19 (please note: often there is no Walk on White during the summer/early fall months as its a very quiet time on the island).
Around Town: When you arrive at The Studios, you’ll get an information packet including a list of a few cultural events that are happening on the island. This will be just a partial list – there are usually too many things happening to list them all! If you want a more comprehensive list of the ‘big’ events that are happening, i.e. festivals, fundraisers, etc. check out www.fla-keys.com/calendarofevents
At The Studios: Please check our website or calendar to learn about the events, classes and concerts that are happening during your residency. In some cases we can offer residency artists discounts on certain programs, depending on availability and demand, so if something looks good to you, let us know!
