We’d like to extend a big thank you to all of the artists and writers who applied for studio space at 533 Eaton Street. It was a difficult decision to make, but we’re pleased to announce that artist Abiy Frew and musician Miguel Perez will be joining our current Studio Artists beginning May 1.
Abiy was born Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. He began drawing on his own as a child and immigrated to the U.S. in 1998, which allowed him to continue his education. He graduated from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in 2006. He has lived in Key West for 10 years with his wife and son.
In 2005, Abiy was the recipient of the Huldah Bender Kerner scholarship for outstanding achievement in painting at the Academy. He has exhibited in numerous group shows in Philadelphia, PA and has been commissioned to do portraits as well as a public mural in Maryland. He has received a number of awards in variety of mediums, including the CHARLES TOPPAN PRIZE for excellence in drawings.
Musician and Producer
Miguel Perez is a musician and producer from Key West, Florida and the creator of MC COUSCOUS and the The Con Leche Band. Growing up in Key West in the 1980’s surrounded by mysterious packages, “jewelry scales”, Cuban extended family and a colorful cast of Key West characters, Miguel experienced a childhood that was anything but ordinary. Drawing inspiration from a life like no other and an imagination that matches its absurdity, Miguel creates music accessible to all. Catch him performing on any given night at the best Key West bars — The Porch, Sloppy Joe’s, The Green Parrot, The Lazy Gecko, Island Dogs, The Rum Barrel, The Original Margaritaville and Blue Heaven Restaurant (click here for schedule). In addition to performing and recording as a solo artist, Miguel has collaborated with celebrated local artists Rolando Rojas, Jeff Clark, Michael Marrero, Tom Flip, and Nick Doll, to produce numerous songs, albums, and music videos. Miguel also works in film, radio and television. His newest web series, Key West in Your Mouth with Chef Martin Liz, is currently in production. With one of the tallest buildings – and most spectacular views – in town, the Hugh’s View rooftop terrace serves as The Studios’ creative space in the sky. The terrace sits four stories above street level and offers panoramic views of the island. The Kitwald Stage glows in the golden twilight of our sunset performances.
With original seating from its days as a Masonic temple, the Helmerich Theater has been updated to also include floor seating. As a black box theater, the set up is intimate but professional, and sets the stage for concerts and performances that leave guests feeling like they really got to know the performer.
