Our New Building
TSKW finds a home to liberate the imagination
THE NEW BUILDING. The Studios is fortunate to have located a property that meets all our needs, the former Scottish Rite Masonic Center at the corner of Simonton and Eaton Streets. Built in 1951, it’s spacious, sturdy and suffused with light – an iconic piece of Miami Deco architecture located in the heart of downtown Key West, just one block from Duval Street.
With dedicated creative spaces for exhibitions, performances, instruction and art making, our new facilities offer a place that lives up to Key West’s creative potential.
The new building almost doubles our space, with a 200 seat professional theater, the island’s largest gallery devoted to contemporary art, nine studios for practicing artists, and two dedicated classrooms, including a cutting edge digital media lab.
With truly professional spaces, we can attract more significant artists to our island, not only to present more ambitious work, but to create art that has never been seen before. By connecting them to our Key West community as instructors, performers and exhibiting artists, we offer opportunities to see the world in entirely new ways.
We also recognize that artist studios are in fact small businesses, and our new building serves an incubator. The artists who work on our campus year-round include painters, writers, fiber artists, sculptors and digital media artists for whom art is a profession, not a hobby. For novices and working artists alike, our workshops offer more than fun experiences; they are opportunities to network and learn new tools and techniques.
