Robert Frost Children & Teens Poetry Contest Awards Ceremony

April 20, 2013

Join us in the beautiful TSKW Sculpture Garden for lemonade and cookies and a celebration of some of the finest young local poets! Awards and readings of the winners of the 2013 Frost Poetry Contest for Children and Teens.

Please note: The winners of the 2013 contest will be announced on April 7, 2013.

Through funds established by the Jeane and Jessie Porter Fund at the Community Foundation of the Florida Keys, TSKW is proud to administer a special component of this contest. Jeane Porter was especially committed to encouraging young writers, and supported the Poetry in Schools contest in Monroe County. The Frost Poetry Contest for Children and Teens continues to nurture and develop the interest of young poets by hosting two juried contests for children ages 6-12 and teens ages 13-18.

Six awards (1st Place, 2nd Place, 3rd Place and three honorable mentions)  will be selected from each age group.

TSKW would like to thank the poetry contest judges:

Janelle Barrera taught in the Key West Public Schools and now tutors students. She has published poetry in magazines/journals but her interest now lies in seeing that children are given an opportunity to discover the creative genius within, whether it be through writing or some other genre. Janelle says, “Reading over 150 entries in this year’s Robert Frost contest for children was rewarding beyond measure.”

Donna Weinstock was a first-grade teacher for 27 years in Chicago, California, and Gainesville, and Key West. Donna says, “I am thoroughly invested in bringing out feelings, emotions, and self expression of children and adults. I feel poetry is a personal voyage towards opening the door to self discovery”.
