Scholarship Fund in Honor of Matt Bergh
The One Human Family Portrait Project honoring the memory of Matt Bergh (Class of 2012), currently on display in the courtyard of the Key West High School, may be complete, but the circle of connection it has created is continuing to expand and embrace many others.
The financial contributions made in Matt’s honor upon his passing on March 31, 2010 were generous memorial gestures thoughtfully guided by Lucy Paige, Matt’s mother. Support continues to be accepted to provide opportunities to Key West High School students to attend Rick Worth’s Painting Boot Camp. Rick Worth taught Matt and his friends in a summer camp program when they were young. The current art class is held weekly at TSKW with a fee of $30. The benefit of the scholarship makes it possible for KWHS students to attend free of charge.
This scholarship program helps students develop a deeper appreciation of the world around them – their island history and character from conch houses, tropical foliage, to the surrounding waters – all scenes that become better understood and appreciated through the creative experience. The students learn not only perspective, composition, and color theory- but also respect and acceptance in a community space that welcomes all. Through the creative process their esteem is strengthened – the students begin to believe in themselves and in their futures.
